1、形象學是比較文學的一個重要領域，研究的是“一國文學中所塑造或描述的‘異國’形象”，法國當代著名的比較文學學者巴柔將之概括為“在文學化，同時也是社會化的運作過程中對異國看法的總和”。形象學與比較文學的發(fā)軔同步，屬于“國際文學關系研究”的范疇，探索一國形象在異國的文學流變，即它是如何被想象、被塑造、被流傳的，分析異國形象產生的深層社會文化背景，并找出折射在他者身上的自我形象。
在翻譯活動中，翻譯的過程同時也是在目標語文化中塑造原語
2、文化形象的過程。譯作是原作及原語文化在目的語文化中的代表。如果說翻譯是一種跨文化閱讀，那么“我注視他者，而他者形象同時也傳遞給了‘我’這個注視者的某種形象”。形象學的研究視角可以為我們審視譯本中“他者”形象的重塑、評價文學作品翻譯中形象的傳遞效果以及促進本國形象的傳遞和跨文化交際提供重要啟示和寶貴參考。
