6、RRcommissionedKingstonUniversity(2008)toundertakeacomparativestudyinvestigatingthedriversofhighgrowthfirms.Thestudyisbasedoninterviewswithownersof21UK18UShighgrowthfirms.ThebusinesseswereidentifiedusingtheDunBradstreetFA

7、MEdatabases.ThetwodatabasesweresearchedusingthecriterialistedbelowtoidentifyasamplingframefromwhichUKUSsamplebusinessescouldbedrawn.Lettersweresenttonamedpotentialrespondentsbelievedtobeownerspartnersdirects.edfirmsweres

8、creenedinatelephonecalltoensuretheioncriteriaweremet.Samplebusinesseseachsatisfiedthefollowingcriteria:●Independence–businesseswerenotpartofownedbylargecompanies●Growthperfmance–businesseshadachieved60%higherrealturnover

9、notclassifiedasbelongingtothegovernmentservicessect.OfthesevenUSgovernmentservicessectfirmsfiveoperatewithintheareaofdefence.ThescaleofdefencespendingintheUSwasoverninetimesthatoftheUKin2007amountingtoover$500bn54.Inaddi

10、tioninrecentyearsUSpendingondefencehasbeenrisingatahigherratethanintheUK.TheincreaseinUSdefencespendingbetween20062007amountedto60%oftheentire2007UKdefencespending.Oncethescaleofthissectisputintocontextitisnotsurprisingt

11、hatchangesintechnologiespriitiesintheareaofdefencecreatelargeopptunitiesfUShighgrowthfirms.CustomersservedThehighgrowthfirmswhichattractthemostpublicityarelargeconsumerfacingganisationssuchasGoogle.Howeveranalysisofthe10

12、0UK100UShighgrowthfirmsshowsthatfbothcountriesthemajityofthefirmsarebusinesstobusiness(B2B)facing.ThisismepronouncedintheUKsamplewhere69%offirmswereB2Bversus62%oftheUSfirms.MeoftheUSfirmsareBusinesstoGovernmentfacingasal

13、readydiscussed.LocationHighgrowthfirmsarefoundinallregionsoftheUKacrosstheUS.OftheUKsample57%offirmsarelocatedinLondontheSouthEast.Figure8showsthedistributionofhighgrowthfirmsacrosstheUKscaledbyregionalGVAindertomakeamem

14、eaningfulcomparison.EvenaftercontrollingfdifferencesinthesizesoftheregionaleconomiesthemapshowsthattheperfmanceofLondontheSouthEastgreatlyexceedsthatofotherregions(LondontheSouthEastregionsaccountf33%oftheUK’sGVAbut57%of

15、theUK’shighgrowthfirms).IntheUS20%ofhighgrowthfirmsarelocatedinCalifniawiththeremaining80%fairlyevenlyspreadacross29states.AgeoffoundersInbothcountriesthehighestnumbersofentrepreneursarefoundinthe30to34agegroupatthetimeo

16、ffoundingthebusiness.HoweverthisismepronouncedintheUKwheretherearefeweryoungerfounders(undertheageof25)foundersintheir40s.TheageprofileoftheUSentrepreneurswasmuchmeevenlyspreadbycomparisonwithagreaternumberoffoundersinth

17、eir20s40s.Inbothcountriestherewerefewfoundersovertheage50.EducationskillsexperienceofentrepreneursInbothcountriesthefoundersofthehighgrowthfirmsarehighlyeducated.HowevertheentrepreneursbehindtheUSfirmsaremehighlyeducated

18、thantheirUKcounterpartswith72ofthe100USfoundingindividualsteamshavingatleastonepersonwithadegreequalificationcomparedto54ftheUK.Similarly29oftheUKfirmshaveonemefounderswithamastersleveldegree(includingMBAqualifications)c

19、omparedto39inUS.Bywayofcomparison24%oftheoverallUKpopulationholddegreelevelqualifications7%holdpostdegreelevelqualifications.NumberoffirmswithfounderswhohavepreviouslyownedaBusinessTheUSentrepreneurswerealsomelikelytohav
